The meaning behind 'Chained Souls'

The name 'Chained Souls' - our films name has a double meaning.

  • One being a literal chain, whether it be the chain Sammi wears around her neck or be it being actually chained to someone.
  • The other meaning is using the idea of being chained as a cycle, the ghosts are going to continue killing more and more people.

The ring idea?

As Our trailer is named 'CHAINED SOULS' with its double meaning, we thought it would be a good idea for us to put some sort of chained style ring on the magazine as a sticker so that our media texts can link.

After that we researched magazines with the same idea and came across the one that used it

After that we searched for rings that looked like chains to go on the cover

These are some rough and very new ideas and so we will look into it more and have an update post about how successful this was.

The music

As we all know the sound and music to a horror trailer is very important as it could be the difference from making the film actually appear scary. when doing a survey about what scares people the most, sound was one of the top answers and so this is very important in order for our trailer to be successful the sound need to be impactful. here is a short piece of music I created to go into our trailer. I used high notes which makes the music sound creepy and very repetitive rhythms that intensifies audiences as seen in horror films such as psycho.

Out cuts? .. Shots we're just not using

During the filming process, we recognised that we wouldn't of had enough clips to put in our trailer so we thought of filming an 'interview section', similar to the Blair Witch Project trailer. With this we gave an actor some dialogue saying:

"I would never visit that house, its been on the news that you shouldn't!"
"I've heard that, once you go in, you never come out"
"I don't even want to talk about the story of Annabelle and that house"

After doing this, and adding it into our trailer we asked Ms Ryder-Owen for feedback - her opinions and feelings towards the clip. she replied saying the following:

 "It didn't work well"
"It was filmed handheld and the camera wasn't stable"

With this feedback as a group we thought about filming this scene over but after careful consideration and the feedback given we realised that it was necessary to our trailer and didn't help tell the story well. so we decided to take this clip out.

Feedback: 104

Tomorrow is our premiere and Shria has created a questionnaire to give out to people after the showing so we can get feedback on our trailer as whole as things we struggled on in the making of the trailer such as sound and how effective it was.

The editing process

To complete the film package we need to have a complete trailer, poster and magazine cover. to do this my group and i spilt and decided to work on different things. Today I helped edit the poster for our trailer.

Here shows a variety of pictures where we edited the eyes on our model to make her look more 'horrified'. this goes through the steps of where we started and how we got to the last result for her eyes specifically. we did this by changing the opacity of her eyes, using the blending options we changed the colours by using a colour overlay. we also changed how we blended the eyes by using a 'colour dodge'. we also decided to use the blood on the hand in the poster as the poster is black and white. to do this we used the lasso tool to to get the blood from the hand to show the actual colour. by doing this it allows the poster to pop more, also the colour red is a massive convention of blood, so we thought it would be a good idea.

Changes changes changes

So we've decided to change some of the things in our trailer as we have a short amount of time to do things we wished to in the beginning. Stay posted for updates!

More editing of the poster

Here are some screen shots of what shria has done today while editing the poster. When deciding whether to change the background colour of the poster, both shria and I tried it with the normal and black background to decide, then we asked the other members of our group and as a whole we decided to go with the black background.

Inspiration and research for Annabelle's Look

So to create Annabelle's look we did some research on ghostly make up and came across the following;

These pictures have given us inspiration for her look as she is supposed to look ghostly. it has also shown us what we don't want her to look like because she is still a child character we want her to look as pure as possible. So, the images with the heavy dark make up are ones we are not going to use as we feel it will not be appropriate to use for a child - even if their decease.

Poster flatplans

When researching posters, we tried to find ones that easily linked to out title 'CHAINED SOULS'.

One member of my group came across this poster

After asking the opinion of our group, we agreed that we liked it. however we also understood that to used this as inspiration we would need to find the link to the title.
Below is the initial flatplan for our poster

So, the link between the poster and the title of our film is that the person in the middle of the poster will be Annabelle as she is now the 'SOUL' and the hands will represent those before her (previous ghosts) - symbolising the 'CHAINED' effect.
